History of the Lutes Trailer Company

In 1931, Clarence Lutes began building trailers in Kalamazoo, Michigan after seeing a trailer model parked on the street. The first six were homemade units that immediately sold. The resultant income allowed them to survive the Depression. In 1934, he hired men and started the Kozy Coach Trailer Company.

In 1940, Lutes sold the Kalamazoo-based Kozy Coach company. However, after WWII, Clarence found that the "bite of the trailer bug" was too difficult to resist. He began building trailers again under the name the Lutes Trailer Company in 1950. 

A year later, the Lutes factory burned nearly to the ground in December of '51—a little over a year after they had started production. In 1952, Lutes moved the Lutes Trailer Company factory to Goshen, Indiana. A year later, the 1953, 32-foot, Lutes King Coach was born.
